Elon Musk's Boring Company Begins Testing Tesla FSD in Las Vegas Tunnels

The Boring Company Testing Tesla FSD in Las Vegas Tunnels

Steve Hill, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), recently shared with Fortune magazine that The Boring Company has been trialing Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system inside its underground tunnels in Las Vegas.

FSD Tests in a Controlled Environment

Hill said the tests have been running for several months, with vehicles currently operating without passengers. Although a safety driver is still required for potential intervention, there have been no accidents so far. He noted that the tunnel environment poses unique challenges for FSD, such as the rocky tunnel walls and lighting decorations that create complex visual effects. Testing is ongoing, and if the removal of safety drivers is considered in the future, the LVCVA may serve as an advisor in the evaluation process.

In Hill’s view, full autonomy is only a matter of time. He stated: “Sooner or later, this is going to be autonomous.”

Latest Progress on the Vegas Loop

The Boring Company’s underground transport system has been in operation at the Las Vegas Convention Center for about four years, mainly serving the convention venues and some nearby hotels. While the entire network has yet to be completed, the company has revealed on social media that new tunnel projects are underway.

According to its official website, the full Vegas Loop will span 68 miles of tunnels with 104 planned stations, and is expected to serve around 90,000 passengers per hour. The system will connect key areas such as the airport, stadiums, and downtown.

Hill noted that although the pace of construction is constrained by approval processes, the existing routes have been well received by attendees and residents. He said it has become the convention center’s “highest rated feature we have,” adding: “People love it.” Delays, he emphasized, are not due to The Boring Company itself but to the approval process slowing things down.
