Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company is “on the cusp of something really tremendous” with its Optimus humanoid robot, highlighting the significant challenges of replicating the human hand.
During Tesla’s Q3 2025 earnings call, Musk explained that designing the hands, fingers, and forearms has proven more difficult than the rest of the robot. Most actuators, like in the human hand, are located in the forearm, making it an intricate engineering challenge.
“To create a useful generalized robot, you need an incredible hand,” Musk said.
Despite the difficulty, Tesla has made progress. Optimus can walk down hills, learn tasks such as Kung Fu moves, and perform service tasks like serving food and drinks. Recent images of a Gen 2.5 version show mannequin-style hands while the team continues developing a functional and visually appealing design.
Musk noted that developing a capable robot is “crucial to the future of the company,” and he personally works with the design team each Friday night. Tesla appears close to overcoming one of the most complex hurdles in humanoid robotics.
